Club Centenary celebrations got under way at the week-end with participation by the club in a number of parades on St. Patrick’s Day. There was an entry from the club in the Clones parade at 12. 30, the
Cootehill parade at 3.00 p.m. and the Ballybay parade at 5.00 p.m. The entry consisted of two club buggies decorated with centenary banners and flags and a very colourful and highly decorated 1971 Volkswagen Beetle driven by Kevin Hickey. The vehicles were led by Captain
Gerard Kelly, and Lady Captain, Roisin Kerr accompanied by a substantial number of local club members in each area. The entry was very well received and particularly so by the children along the routes who were the recipients of several boxes of sweets generously provided by the Captain. There was an amusing incident on Market St. in Cootehill when the Vice Captain’s attention was apparently diverted by the crowd and, as a result, allowed his buggy to career into the rear of Kevin’s Beetle. In front of an enthralled audience Kevin’s passenger, Melvin, issued dire threats of claims, compensation and legal proceedings but harmony was quickly restored over refreshments during a pit stop in Lisnalong on the way to Ballybay. Both Captains were delighted at the success of the venture and wish to extend their thanks and appreciation to all the members in various areas for their support and participation in what was a
very worthwhile and enjoyable occasion.
