The Alliance at Virginia will take place on Monday 17th of February (postponed from 10th of February) The Alliance held in Clones was a great success and congratulations to our own Elaine Hamilton who claimed victory. Thanks to President Catherine Farrell and also Teresa Hanawin, Mary O’Toole, Phyllis McDermott and Kathleen Leonard for all their hard work. Lady Captain Bridie Keenan was on hand to greet the visitors as they finished their round. There were 27 players.

Cavan / Monaghan Alliance.

The Captain and President represented the club at the A.G.M. of the Cavan/ Monaghan Alliance in Belturbet on Friday evening last. In his report the Secretary,Fergus Lane, stressed the difficulties he had encountered in communicating with clubs during the year and “sometimes thought that people were deliberately trying to avoid contact”.  He also felt that this problem had more to do with communication within clubs as between the clubs and theAlliance.  There was full agreement that this must be tackled and all delegates attending undertook to rectify the situation within their own clubs. Clones, under the direction of our Captain will be doing so immediately.  He is determined to ensure that all information will be communicated to the relevant people and they, in turn, will be expected to carry out their duties accordingly. Fergus also stated, “after a lot of manoeuvring and quite a few hiccups all but one of the cups and trophies were decided” All of the one day events were extremely successful and well organised as was the Alliance Shield but there appeared to be a lack of interest in the others. As a result it was agreed to abandon the Treacy Cup and the Howell Cup for this year.  After intervention from Clones the Norman Cinnamon Cup was given a reprieve for another year in the hope that interest might be revived and participation improved.  The alliance Cup will be held in Clones this year on a date to be arranged.

The Captain, Gerard, outlined the Clones program of events for the Centenary year and was given a great reception.  The club will indeed have the support of our friends in theAllianceduring this historic year of 2013.

Ladies Alliance Huge Success

Clones Golf Club hosted the ladies Alliance on Monday 16th of January and are delighted to report that 47 ladies came to play our magnificent course. The weather wasn’t too kind to the ladies as it was bitterly cold however, the course attracted favourable comments from our many visitors. The day ran very smoothly and grateful thanks go to the ladies who baked scones particularly Mary O’Reilly who was a godsend in the kitchen and made a great job of tidying up the aftermath. Thanks also to Maureen Lynch for her assistance with the book. The overall winner of the 13 hole stableford competition was Jill Roulier with 25 points. Jill was particularly impressed with the conditions of the course and brought in a great score off her 10 handicap. In 2nd place was Mary McNamee with 24 points and 3rd place, on a countback went to Claire Thomas also 24 points. Section A was won by Margaret Sheridan with 21 points, Section B was our own Noeleen McCague with 23 points and Section C was won by another Clones lass, Teresa Hanawin also with 23 points. Due to the layout of the course competed over it was decided to give a 4th and 5th prize instead of the usual 9’s and congratulations go to E. Murphy 23 points and Nuala Mulholland also 23 points. The ladies availed of the fine catering upon their return to the clubhouse and many thanks to Aidan Fitzpatrick and his team for satiating the hungry golfers. Well done to everyone who took part and a particular mention to Helen Connolly, her first golfing outing after knee surgery who was just pipped for a prize after a no-score on the 18th! The next Alliance outing is at Headfort in February, details in locker room.
