Club Classic Huge Success

Another fabulous Clones Golf Club Classic was successfully brought to a conclusion at the presentation of prizes on Sunday night. Thank you to all our sponsors especially Clones Credit Union Limited and President Frankie Dolan, our main event sponsors. Captain Paul Jenkins and his team worked tirelessly to ensure the event ran like a well-oiled machine. Nothing was left to chance and the positive comments regarding the course made all at Clones Golf Club very proud. The greens were superb! Well done Finbar and Hugh John, the course is a credit to you and all the volunteers. There are many many people to thank for the successful running of this classic and it would be foolish to try and name them all as to omit someone might offend. However Captain Paul and the burger chefs on the 9th have to get special mention! The winners with 97 points were Donal O’Reilly, Shane Morgan, Paul Igoe and Tony Greenan. 2nd with 95 were Paul Fitzpatrick, Barry Duffy, Paddy Kerr and Tommy McCormick. 3rd with 95 Benny Freeman, Gaby Kerr, Paddy Kerr and Mel Farrelly. 4th with 94 Brendan Casey, Donal Guckian, Adrian Trappe and Francie Beggan (Rossmore GC). 5th 94 Brian Curran, Niall Wrafter, Charlie Browne and Anthony Pilkington and 6th also with 94 were Mac Sammon, Francie Boylan, Kenny Farrelly and Gerry Traynor. Frankie New President

The 101st Annual General Meeting of the joint Club took place on Sunday last with a very moving speech from outgoing President Martin Taylor, a year of contrasts, citing the sad death of Dan Maguire and Liam Quigley, a very comprehensive sum-up of a very interesting Centenary Year and heartfelt thanks to everyone at the club who had made themselves available and had given something of themselves to the club in a voluntary capacity. The hard work of Hugh John and Finbar were also mentioned and the splendid condition of our course is a reflection of their dedication and expertise. The two outgoing Captains Gerry Kelly and Rosin Kerr were praised along with the Centenary Committee for marking the year in such splendid fashion. Reports were then heard from the Treasurer Donal O’Reilly and Secretary Paddy McKeown. The new President was elected, Mr Frankie Dolan who expressed his pride at being asked to take such a prestigious post. He stated he would endeavour to do his very best for the club as the outgoing President had done. Paddy McKeown agreed to stay on as Secretary so too did Donal O’Reilly as Treasurer. The elected Committee Members are Roisin Kerr, Anne McCarthy, Maureen Lynch, Kathleen Leonard, Paul Fitzpatrick, Phil McCrystal, George Rice and Mike Keane. They will serve alongside Captain Paul Jenkins, Vice-Captain Gerry Traynor, Lady Captain Brid Finlay and Vice-Captain Rosita McCabe. There was one proposal that players over 80 years old receive a reduction on their subscription which was unanimously passed. The Treasurer informed the members that all Subscriptions must be paid by either Direct Debit or in full by March 31st. A list of members will be displayed in the clubhouse as per section 10.7 of the Constitution. The meeting concluded and the assembled members took turns to congratulate the outgoing President Martin Taylor on his wonderful tenure and welcomed the incoming President Frankie Dolan and wished him a very successful term in office.

Sad News

It was with shock and much sadness that we heard the news that Liam Quigley had passed away suddenly. Liam had just been elected back onto the Management Committee and was enthusiastic about the future of the club. Indeed Liam had served Clones Golf Club well standing as President and Captain and in various roles during his time on the Management Committee. Clones Golf Club extends sincere sympathy to Liam’s wife Gay and their sons Donal and Darragh. May he rest in peace.

President’s Piece

President Martin Taylor witnessed and unlikely par last Wednesday while playing in a friendly fourball. Nat Doonan played his usual fine drive across the corner of the lake at “Splash” (par 4, 6th) only for his ball to land in the sand spreader being driven by Finbar! Unaware of his extra cargo, Finbar continued on his merry way and disgorged the ball with the sand about 40 metres from the green. After an excellent chip, Nat failed to sink the putt and finished with a rather unusual par. An interesting debate on the relevant rules ensued!
